Fractional Product FAQs

Common questions answered

What is fractional?

“Fractional” describes an embedded way of working on a consulting, contract, or otherwise part-time basis. I operate like a full-time product leader, but without a W-2, benefits, or a long-term commitment. I’m part of your team—available on Slack, joining key meetings, and working in your existing tools—rather than popping in for the occasional Zoom call. You can learn even more about fractional work in my blog post.

What type of companies do you work with?

I work with enterprise B2B companies selling into mid-market through Fortune 500 accounts, with high-value (five-plus figure) contracts and complex buying processes. In many cases, the buyer is not the product’s end user; I have deep experience in B2B2C and developer-implemented technology—products sold to businesses but ultimately experienced by the consumer.

If your company falls outside of this, but it is technical, complex, or requires strong customer discovery and prioritization, there’s a good chance I can help.

Can you help us hire a full-time PM or product leader?

Yes. If hiring is part of your long-term plan, I can help define roles, vet candidates, design interviews, and onboard them so they’re set up for success.

Can you work alongside a full-time head of product or other existing product staff?

Yes. Fractional isn’t only for teams without product leadership. Sometimes staff augmentation in the form of another senior product leader—a right-hand partner who can plug gaps, challenge blind spots, or take on high-leverage work—is exactly what the team needs. In this way, it’s about reinforcing leadership rather than replacing it.

Have you ever been an executive?

No, I haven’t held an executive title, and that’s a benefit for the teams I work with. Many product leaders move into executive roles early and haven’t shipped product hands-on in years. I bring more than ten years of individual contributor experience, nearly two years of people management (including hiring), and just as much experience influencing strategy and leading work without relying on a title. I’m used to being close to the product and team, which means I’m grounded in feasible, realistic guidance and decisions that actually move things forward.

Do you only work remotely?

Most of my work is remote, but I can meet in person in NYC and travel for key workshops, kickoffs, or strategy sessions.

What hours do you work?

I keep East Coast hours. I’m generally available Monday through Friday between 10am and 6pm, and most of my client work happens in the afternoons roughly between 1–6pm. If a team has earlier standing meetings, I can shift my schedule earlier and work mornings into the early afternoon. I tend to spread my hours with you across all five weekdays unless there is a holiday or I am out of office. I don’t typically work full 8-hour days for a single client.

How can I learn more about your rates?

For 20-hour/week engagements, rates start at $149/hour. For 10-hour/week engagements, rates can go up to $250/hour. I try to keep pricing simple and flexible, and I’m happy to talk it through and understand your budget before deciding what makes sense. If you really want to get an idea on your own, I made a transparent rate calculator.

Do you work on retainer?

No, I don’t use retainers. I don’t like the idea of charging for time that wasn’t actually used. I prefer billing hourly—it suits me and keeps me focused on the work. I invoice monthly based on hours actually worked, so you’re not paying in advance. If a week comes in a little under, I’ll sometimes roll those hours into the following week. I aim to keep billing straightforward, fair, and transparent.

How soon can we start?

If I have availability, we can usually begin within 1–3 weeks.
